November 2013

November 12–14, 2013
Morehead Conference Center
Morehead State University
Morehead, Kentucky

The Appalachian Higher Education (AHE) Network's fall 2013 meeting took place November 12–14 on the campus of Morehead State University (MSU). The meeting gave AHE Network members from across Appalachia an opportunity to learn more about Kentucky's policy and practice strategies in support of increased postsecondary education.

Kentucky Center for Education and Workforce Statistics Executive Director Charles McGrew discussed how to develop and use longitudinal data to evaluate education and workforce programs and to better inform public policy and practice. In addition, he shared insights from his recent study of the out-migration of Appalachia's college graduates and address what it many mean for future educational attainment levels in the region. The director of the MSU Early College Program, Joel Pace, described that initiative and discussed feedback from local school superintendents.

MSU Assistant Vice President Dan Connell moderated a panel discussion focused on meeting the challenges of improving educational outcomes of Appalachian youth and families. Participants included Dreama Gentry, executive director of Partners for Education at Berea College; Sue Cain, director of college readiness and developmental education with the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education; and Sue Hoskins, director of outreach services with the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.

Discussion topics for AHE Network members at the meeting included how the strategies being used in Kentucky can be replicated in other communities.
