Members of the ARC Export Trade Advisory Council and Network Appalachia transportation planning and development group met at ARC's summer 2013 Global Appalachia working session, held June 18–20, 2013, in Mobile, Alabama. Hosted by the Port of Mobile and the Alabama Department of Commerce's International Trade Division, the workshop focused on supply chain and export development opportunities that can help Appalachian businesses become more competitive in both domestic and global markets.
Workshop participants took a behind-the-scenes tour of the fast-growing Port of Mobile, an Appalachian gateway to markets worldwide. The tour included the port's new container terminal and its on-dock intermodal rail terminal now under construction. The port's role—and that of Appalachia's other coastal ports—is expected to grow with the 2015 completion of the Panama Canal expansion project, which will reshape global trade flows.
